How To Add More CPUs To Mental Ray
How To Add More CPUs To Mental Ray is an "How To Guide on giving Mantal Ray more bang for you buck. This Guide belongs to an ehow Contributor By the name of Franklin Thomas. I thought this would be kind of interesting, because I use MR or Mental Ray quite frequently for my 3D renders.
Mental Ray is a rendering application that is owned by the 3D rendering card manufacturer nVidia. It achieves realistic image results by employing large amounts of processing power into the generation of images. The process is known as "ray tracing" a mathematical technique where the path of light is sent through the pixels on an image and the effects are simulated. However, ray tracing is a slow process. Adding additional CPUs to a cluster of computers dedicated to rendering images will improve the speed at which an image is generated.
Instructions
1: Log into the Mental Ray control server on your rendering network, also known as a "render farm." You will need to supply a user name and password with sufficient access to the Mental Ray configuration.
2: Click "Render Nodes."
3: Click "Add Node."
4: Enter the IP address of the rendering system on your network.
5: Configure the amount of RAM, disk space allocated to rendering. You may select the number of CPUs, or cores assigned to the rendering process, by selecting the number from the drop-down "CPU" list. Each core is treated as a new CPU. If this is a dedicated rendering machine, simply click "Allocate All."
